A weird situation unfolded in the fourth tier of English football this week that saw one team forced to wear their third kits in a home fixture.
EFL League Two sides Gillingham FC and AFC Wimbledon squared off at Gillingham’s home ground, Priestfield Stadium, on Monday, April 21. But rather than wearing their usual blue home kit with white sleeves, Gillingham was forced to wear their green third kit after the EFL advised that none of AFC Wimbledon’s three 2024-25 kits provided enough contrast against Gillingham’s home kit.

According to The Sun, Gillingham fans on social media weren’t fans of the decision. “We have no backbone, we are at home, it’s the other teams fault. We are being a soft touch,” one is quoted as saying. “That’s absolutely pathetic to choose to play in green because of their kit issues, make them wear bibs,” another opined.
Admins for the Gills’ official Twitter account seemed to embrace the change, though, especially after the Gills came away with a 1-0 win.
AFC Wimbledon wore their white third kit in the match.

Gillingham currently sit in 17th place in League Two with two matches left in the season, but are on a 10-game unbeaten run since early March. AFC Wimbledon is in fifth place; if they finish there, they’d participate in a four-team playoff to determine the last of four teams to be promoted to League One.
