Chicago White Sox Pay Tribute to NBA’s Bulls With New City Connect Uniform

This evening, the Chicago White Sox took their second shot at a City Connect uniform, unveiling a new red and black design that pays tribute to both the White Sox and the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

The new jersey is red with black pinstripes and features a “CHICAGO” wordmark arched across the chest in black lettering trimmed in white, taken directly from the front of the Bulls’ “Statement” uniform. Both sleeves are black with a red and white winged-sock patch, a newly designed logo inspired by the White Sox logo of the 1950s.

A thick red stripe wraps around the sleeve cuffs with the word “SOUTHSIDE” repeatedly printed in black, a nod back to their previous City Connect set. The player’s number is on the lower left side of the jersey, below the chest wordmark, in black with a white outline. The player’s name is arched in white over a large black number with white trim on the back of the jersey.

The uniform includes black pants, which is the first new City Connect design to feature dark pants in nearly a year. The red stripe with “SOUTHSIDE” lettering from the sleeves is carried down the side of the pants.

For the first time in the City Connect program, the White Sox will offer two official on-field cap designs with this uniform, although the Dodgers and Pirates have both worn multiple caps with their City Connect sets. Both caps display the new winged-sock logo on the crown with “CHICAGO” embroidered in white within the sock. One version is a red crown with black pinstripes and a black visor, while the other features a black crown with a red visor. Each cap includes four white stars on the eyelets, referencing the design of Chicago’s oft-referenced city flag.

“Our initial City Connect jersey was iconic. We wanted to build on the reach and connection of that City Connect uniform by creating a look that physically represents Chicago’s sports identity and do something that has never been done,” said White Sox Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Brooks Boyer in the press release. “For the first time, two of Chicago’s franchises will be represented on one jersey on a major league field. From the ‘Chicago’ wordmark across the chest representing our city to the crossover elements within the jersey and cap, every detail is meant to be more than just a jersey and cap, but emblems of what it means to be bred in Chicago.”

The jersey’s inside back collar features the years of the nine total championships between the two teams, with the White Sox titles in white and the Bulls in red. The Chicago White Sox logo and Chicago Bulls logo is on either side.

Across the base of the jersey and one of the caps, we see pinstripes in reference to the various uniforms worn by both teams—the Bulls have worn pinstripes on their black alternate uniforms a few times, first from 1995 to 1997 and again since 2019. The White Sox, of course, have worn pinstripes many times in their 125-year history. Their current run of pinstripes on their home whites dates back to the last week of the 1990 season.

“The Bulls were proud to contribute to the White Sox efforts and to be a part of creating the first-ever MLB jersey to feature NBA team marks,” added Jon Shoemaker, Executive Director of Creative Services at the Chicago Bulls. “While collaborating with the White Sox on the design, our shared goal was clear that we wanted to honour our city and its great fans with an MLB jersey that reflects our mutual connection to and love for Chicago. We added visual elements that both teams share, like pinstripes, as well as details that are unique to the Bulls, like the ‘Chicago’ wordmark and our signature red and black.”

Maybe the Bulls will return the favour with their City Edition uniform this fall.

The “CHICAGO” arched wordmark was first worn by the Bulls on their road red uniforms for four seasons, starting in 1969, then in white with a black drop shadow. It returned in its current form—red with black and white trim—on their alternate black uniforms in 1999. The team is also calling it a nod to their uniforms of the 1930s—the Sox did wear something similar on the road, coloured blue and red from 1939 to 1948.

Chicago’s new crossover uniform will make its on-field debut when the White Sox take on the Houston Astros at home this Friday. The White Sox are the fifth MLB team to release their new Nike MLB City Connect uniform in 2025, following releases from the Houston Astros, Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants, and Colorado Rockies. We’re still scheduled to see three more before the season’s over; those clubs are the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, and Miami Marlins.
