Minnesota Vikings Announce Dates For Throwback, “Winter Warrior” Alternate Uniforms

The Minnesota Vikings announced last week they’ll wear their throwback uniforms twice this season, including their home opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 14 and Week 18 matchup with the Green Bay Packers, as well as their “Winter Warrior” alternate uniforms when they host the Detroit Lions on Christmas Day.

The throwback uniforms, which pay homage to the “Purple People Eaters” defense that led the Vikings to 10 division titles and four Super Bowl appearances between 1968-78, feature a deeper purple hue than their standard uniforms, gold-trimmed block numbers and a classic striping pattern on the purple jerseys and white pants.

Minnesota wore similar throwback uniforms for at least one game each season from 2007-11, though that design had solid white numbers and glossy purple helmets, whereas the Vikings put throwback decals and a gray facemask on their standard satin purple helmets this time around.

The Vikings are 1-2 in the throwback uniforms since they were revived in 2023, including losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears that season and a win over the Houston Texans in 2024. They notably wore a patch on their jerseys in the loss to the Buccaneers in honor of legendary coach Bud Grant, who passed away that spring.

Meanwhile, Minnesota debuted the “Winter Warrior” alternate uniforms in a win over the Bears last December. The all-white uniforms feature purple numbers with a metallic silver stroke and icicles hanging from the digits, as well as metallic silver and purple sleeve and pants stripes that match the design of their home purple and white road looks.

There’s also a new “Vikings” wordmark across the chest, which is written in Minnesota’s “Skol” font, and a Nordic knot design on the back collar that is a nod to head coach Kevin O’Connell’s mantra of “Our Way, Our Team, Our Process.” It’s the first uniform in franchise history that doesn’t include a purple helmet.

The white helmets feature a metallic silver facemask, metallic silver stripe down the center and white horns outlined in purple, matching the version of the Vikings’ primary logo that was painted at midfield during their first two “Winter Whiteouts,” which included a win over the New York Giants in 2022 and a loss to the Lions in 2023.

During those games, the Vikings wore their standard purple helmets with white jerseys, pants and socks, as they effectively surveyed fans on their desire for an all-white uniform. Presumably, Minnesota will once again paint the midfield logo and end zones at U.S. Bank Stadium to match the throwback and alternate uniform designs.
