Texas Tech Red Raiders Reveal Throwback-Inspired Football Uniforms For 100th Anniversary

The Texas Tech Red Raiders football program will celebrate their 100th anniversary this fall by wearing throwback-inspired uniforms during their Homecoming game against Kansas on Oct. 11.

The adidas uniforms blend various eras of Red Raiders football, with a red “Tech” wordmark across the chest of the black jerseys that was used on Texas Tech’s original uniforms in 1925. There’s also a simplified Double “T” on the black helmets that dates back to 1926.

The Double “T” can also be seen in the design on the sleeves, which is inspired by the vertical stripes on the front of the Red Raiders’ 1930 uniforms, which were considered “cutting edge” at that time, when very few teams had logos on their uniforms.

The canvas-colored numbers are rendered in a vintage block font, while the matching pants feature a red and black striping pattern down the sides that pays homage to The Masked Rider and his horse’s breast collar from the 1960s.

Smaller details include the gold tab on the back collar, which is an interesting addition given Nike’s use of gold tabs in college basketball and the NBA, as well as laser-perforated dates (1925 and 2025) on opposite sides of the Double “T” at the base of the collar.

The uniforms are complete with four red star decals on the front of the helmet, which were awarded to players by head coach Jim Carlen from 1970-74, though Texas Tech incorrectly lists this detail as 1969. Carlen later carried that tradition with him to South Carolina.

This marks the first time in school history that the stars will appear on the black helmets, as the Red Raiders only wore white helmets during Carlen’s tenure.
