Detroit Red Wings Reveal Special, Heritage-Rich Centennial Season Uniform

The Detroit Red Wings unveiled their commemorative Centennial season uniform this morning, a heritage-heavy set that spans several eras of the club’s history, including their time as the Cougars and Falcons.

Designed by the Red Wings, the red jersey sticks to the classic Red Wings look by placing their original version of their iconic “Winged Wheel” logo on the chest in off-white with a special (and pretty epic) chain-stitching effect. In the upper right corner, the captaincy letters are in black on a faux-leather style diamond, similar to what the club wore in the 1950s. The collar is red with red laces.

Each sleeve, the hem, and the socks are decorated with several thin horizontal stripes, a direct tribute to the striping worn on the uniforms of the Detroit Falcons, circa 1930. Player name and numbers are based on the Cougars’ “barber pole” uniforms worn during the 1927-28 season.

The previously unveiled Red Wings’ Centennial patch is on the left shoulder, a redesigned “Hockeytown” wordmark is on the inside back collar, and a list of the team’s 11 Stanley Cup winning seasons is on the inside back hem. The right shoulder features a relatively unobtrusive advertisement patch for Priority.

For the first time in Red Wings history, the team will wear a matte-finish helmet, this one’s red to match the rest of the uniform, and will also feature a 1960s-style Meijer logo as the advertisement (if ads absolutely have to be there, this is the way to do it on a throwback uniform!). The launch video also featured a vintage CCM logo on the front (I love everything about this trend; keep it going)

In addition to the leather-style captaincy patches, the players will wear brown leather-style gloves (as all players did up until the 1950s). A leather-style patch will be worn as the “jock tag” with the Detroit Cougars’ “D”, and again on the back inside hem loop (they’re running out of places to hide things on these jerseys). Pants are solid red with the Cougars’ “D” again in white on the front.

“Red Wings fans have long embraced the Winged Wheel, and we wanted our Centennial uniform to commemorate its legacy,” said Ryan Gustafson, President and CEO, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, over at the team’s official website. “This design honours the traditions that make Red Wings hockey truly distinctive, while incorporating meaningful details to celebrate this remarkable milestone in a way that stays authentic to Detroit.”

The Centennial jersey will be worn for more than a dozen home games during the 2025-26 season, debuting on Thursday, October 9, against the Montreal Canadiens. Beyond those centennial nights, the club’s regular home and road jerseys will also carry the season-long Centennial patch.

Fans can pre-order the Centennial jersey starting today at ShopHockeytown.com (not an affiliate link), with current player and alumni name/number options and blanks available (free shipping included to U.S. addresses). In-person sales will begin in early October at the Red Wings Team Store at Little Caesars Arena.
