The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys will both wear throwback uniforms on Thanksgiving as they host the Green Bay Packers (1 p.m. ET on FOX) and Kansas City Chiefs (4:30 p.m. ET on CBS), respectively.
This marks the first appearance for the Lions’ throwback uniforms since their full uniform redesign in 2024, as they wore their black alternate uniforms three times last season to maximize the number of times an alternate or throwback uniform could be worn, though that rule expanded this year to four combined appearances.
They are 0-4 on Thanksgiving while wearing the uniforms – which feature plain silver helmets, Honolulu blue jerseys with silver block numbers, plain silver pants and Honolulu blue socks – since they were introduced, including losses to the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, Chicago Bears in 2018, Houston Texans in 2020 and Packers in 2022.
That’s not to be confused with the throwback uniforms they wore in 1994, 2001-04, 2008 and 2010, which were similar but included a black facemask instead of gray and a darker shade of blue on the jerseys and socks. Detroit went 2-5 on Thanksgiving in that design, including a win over Green Bay in 2003 and loss to the Packers in 2001.
The Cowboys, meanwhile, will be outfitted in their 1960s throwback uniforms – which feature white helmets, blue jerseys with stars on the shoulders and white pants – for the fourth straight Thanksgiving, with wins over the New York Giants in 2022 and 2024 and Washington Commanders in 2023.
The throwback design was initially worn almost every Thanksgiving from 2004 until the NFL implemented its one-helmet rule in 2013. Dallas went 5-3 on Thanksgiving during the uniform’s original run, though it’s worth noting they were also worn in a 26-20 win over the Chiefs in October 2009.
The other appearances include wins over the Chicago Bears in 2004, Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, New York Jets in 2007, Oakland Raiders in 2009, Miami Dolphins in 2011 and losses to the Denver Broncos in 2005, New Orleans Saints in 2010 and Washington Redskins in 2012.

Additionally, all six teams playing on Thanksgiving – including the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens (8:20 p.m. ET on NBC) – will wear a patch on their jerseys in honor of late Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster John Madden. This is the third season in a row in which the patch will be worn.
