Just like the township of York was reincorporated into the city of Toronto in 1834, the city’s Canadian Premier League club is rebranding and updating its name.
The club formerly known as York United FC unveiled its new name and crest on Thursday, November 27. Henceforth, they’ll officially be known as Inter Toronto Football Club.
Much like the city’s own transformation from York to Toronto in 1834, this evolution signals the club’s intent to move forward with purpose, representing a community that continues to grow and inspire through the universal language of soccer. The club is proudly Canadian and deeply committed to showcasing the talent, diversity, and resilience of homegrown talent, both at home and on the international stage.

The new crest features a “Trillium White” stylized T with “Tower Stone” grey highlights in the “Lake Ontario Blue” centre of a roundel. The outside of the roundel is white, with “INTER TORONTO” written in blue around the top half and “FOOTBALL CLUB” around the bottom half, separated by blue dots. The roundel also has blue and “Sunrise Gold” outlines.

The new crest draws inspiration from Toronto’s iconic skyline and the three rivers (Humber, Don and Rouge) that flow into Lake Ontario, a symbol of unity and constant movement. Its colours include Lake Ontario Blue, Trillium White, Sunrise Gold, and Tower Stone. Together, they reflect the balance between ambition, authenticity, and capturing the energy of the city.

The club also unveiled a secondary mark featuring the stylized T isolated from the crest with “INTER” in gold and “TORONTO” in white arched over top. They’re also using a gold slanted “1834” mark heavily on social media and digital applications.

“Our city stands for opportunity and resilience and our club must reflect that,” said club owner and president Ricardo Pasquel in a press release. “Inter Toronto is the next step in our journey to strengthen Canadian soccer and provide a true pathway for young players to grow right here at home. We are investing in our community and in a future where Inter Toronto becomes a symbol of what this sport can achieve in Canada. It is an exciting moment, and it belongs to everyone who believes in what we are building.”
The team joined the CanPL as one of its inaugural eight teams in 2019, and was then known as York9 FC, a nod to the nine municipalities that make up the York Region. The club rebranded as York United FC in December 2020. In 2023, the club was sold from the Baldassarra family to Canadian Soccer Business, which runs the CanPL. Later that year, it was sold to Game Plan Sports Group, headed by Mexican brothers Eduardo, Ricard and Miguel Pasquel.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it was one of the names Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment considered in 2006 for the Major League Soccer club that eventually became Toronto FC. Other options that were either trademarked or presented in online voting included Toronto Northmen, Toronto Norsemen and Toronto Reds. MLSE filed for an Inter Toronto trademark with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office in March 2006 but later withdrew it.
Inter Toronto will continue to play its home games at York Lions Stadium on the campus of York University for the 2026 CanPL season. But CEO Eduardo Pasquel said at Thursday’s unveiling that the club is looking at stadium options closer to the city centre, with a particular eye on Lamport Stadium in Liberty Village, the former home of the Toronto Wolfpack rugby league team. The club also has plans to expand its academy to more age groups.
