For the second time this season, the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be involved in a game where both teams are wearing throwback uniforms when they meet on Thursday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime).
The Falcons will be outfitted in their 1966 throwback uniforms, which feature red helmets that display their classic logo on the sides, black jerseys with block numbers and the same logo on the sleeves, white pants and striped socks.
Atlanta has worn a variation of these uniforms since 2009, originally with red helmets until the NFL implemented its one-helmet rule in 2013, then blended eras by pairing their standard black and throwback decals with their 1966 jerseys, pants and socks from 2016-2021.
When the league relaxed its policy in 2022, the Falcons reintroduced the red shells. which feature a gray facemask and stripes down the center that borrows its colors from in-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech. They are 8-2 in the uniforms since the red helmets returned.
That includes a 24-14 win over the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 13, with the Bills outfitted in their “Standing Buffalo” throwback uniforms in that matchup. They’re scheduled to wear them one more time this season when the take on the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 29.
Meanwhile, the Buccaneers will wear the home version of their creamsicle throwback uniforms, which feature a white helmet with Bucco Bruce decals on the sides, fluorescent orange jerseys with red accents and white pants with a traditional striping pattern.
The uniforms were originally worn from their inaugural season in 1976 until a significant redesign in 1997, though they returned as a throwback option from 2009-12 before the NFL implemented the aforementioned one-helmet rule.
The look was shelved for 10 seasons as a result but returned in 2023 after the league relaxed that rule. Fittingly, Tampa Bay is 0-2 in the uniforms since they were reintroduced after they went an NFL-worst 100-233-1 during their original run, including an infamous 0-26 start.
This marks the first and only appearance for the uniforms this season, though the Buccaneers wore the road version – which was revealed this summer – in a 29-27 win over the New York Jets on Sept. 21 and a 38-35 win over Seattle on Oct. 5, with the Seahawks wearing their 1990s-era threads.
Additionally, Tampa Bay has painted a throwback-inspired design on the natural grass field at Raymond James Stadium for tonight’s game, with Bucco Bruce at midfield and fluorescent orange end zones with white “Tampa Bay” and “Buccaneers” wordmarks.
This is a significant departure from their previous throwback games, when they painted their throwback helmet at the 50-yard line and used grass-colored end zones with the aforementioned white wordmarks instead.
