Akron RubberDucks celebrate French onion dip with alternate identity

The Double-A Akron RubberDucks, an affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians in the Eastern League, will play as the Chip Dippers as part of their “Only in Akron” alternate identity series. The identity features an anthropomorphic bowl of dip holding a bag of chips, which it is dipping into itself.

Akron’s claim to chip dip fame begins in the late 1930s, when Lawson’s Milk Company was founded in nearby Cuyahoga Falls. As the company’s French onion chip dip gained popularity, other Ohio companies like Toft Dairy and Smith’s Dairy launched their own versions of the product.

“We are excited to pay homage to Akron’s favorite chip companion,” RubberDucks President and General Manager Jim Pfander said in a statement. “Chip dip has been a major part of Akron get-togethers for decades. We are excited to celebrate Akron’s chip dip history for a pair of nights this summer and find out who has the best chip dip in the area.”

The RubberDucks aren’t going to just dip once and end it—they’ll play two games as the Chip Dippers on June 19 and 20, 2026.
