Bowling Green Hot Rods honor rare animal with White Squirrels identity

The Bowling Green Hot Rods, High A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays in the South Atlantic League, will try to bring their team a little luck this season with an alternate identity based on the rare white squirrel. Since they were first spotted in Kentucky about a century ago, it’s been considered good luck to spot a white squirrel.

The primary logo features a white squirrel hanging from a tree branch, its tail and body forming the letter S for Squirrels. A secondary logo highlights the squirrel catching an acorn with a baseball glove.

White squirrels are technically eastern gray squirrels who have a condition called leucism, which is like albinism but with black eyes instead of red. Per the team, “Bowling Green has one of the largest populations of white squirrels in North America, landing in the top 10, posting similar numbers to Washington D.C., Minneapolis, and downtown Boston.”

The White Squirrels of Bowling Green will make their on-field debut May 22, 2026, against the Asheville Tourists.
