AHL Club to Wear Cleveland Barons Throwbacks

Cleveland Barons

The Cleveland Barons will skate again.

For a day.

In the American Hockey League.

Yes kids, the National Hockey League’s first and only foray into Cleveland will be remembered a month from now when the Lake Erie Monsters wear the Barons old uniforms for “Cleveland (Hockey) Rocks! Night” against the San Antonio Rampage on February 20th.

It’s fitting that an American Hockey League team would be honouring the Barons, the original Cleveland Barons were an AHL team founded in 1937 and played in the league for another 37 seasons. The NHL’s Barons then spent two seasons in Cleveland after moving to Ohio from California in 1976, the team merged with the Minnesota North Stars where they carried on with the North Stars identity in 1978. The Cleveland Barons returned to the AHL as an affiliate of the San Jose Sharks in 2001, they moved to Worcester, MA in 2006.

Lake Erie will auction off the Barons jerseys both during and after their game on February 20th.
