The Atlanta Falcons are one of four NFL teams set to debut new uniforms next season, joining the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And while we have to wait until April for the official unveiling, head coach Dan Quinn recently sat down with the team’s digital managing editor, Matt Tabeek, to preview the upcoming changes.
“Well, I think (the players) put a lot into the way they look, No. 1.” Quinn said. “Think about all of us being on team sports and you have your uniform. Like, man, that feels right. But for this particular look, yeah, I’ve been fighting for this. For a few years, too, so I couldn’t be more thrilled to see some of this look come together.”
Atlanta has worn its current design, which features a unique sleeve design and piping down the pants, since 2003 — though the team promoted the red alternate jersey with white pants to its primary look after just one season in all-black uniforms.
The Falcons have also worn throwback uniforms on several occasions under Quinn’s leadership, pairing their 1990s-era black helmets with their 1966 throwback jersey and pants, in addition to an all-red Color Rush set in 2017 (with a black helmet, of course, due to the NFL’s one-helmet rule).
Quinn, who is entering his sixth season as head coach, didn’t share any specific details about the uniforms aside from the fact that he’s been clamoring for a new look since he was hired.
“I am in full support of this move and where we’re at,” Quinn said. “Not only will the players be happy, but I think the fans (will be, too). I know the head coach certainly is. I think it looks really cool.”
So while we have — at minimum — five weeks before Atlanta’s uniforms are unveiled, at least we know one prominent member of the organization is happy with the Falcons’ new direction. It remains to be seen if the fans will be, too.
