Baltimore Orioles Wearing #5 Patch for Brooks Robinson

The Baltimore Orioles will wear a number 5 patch on their jersey sleeve for the remainder of the 2023 season (and hopefully for 2024, too!) in memory of the legendary Brooks Robinson, starting with tonight’s game against Boston.

The patch shows Robinson’s number 5 in orange on a black circle with orange and black trim around it. For the few games that had been played since Robinson’s death at the age of 86 on September 26th, the Orioles had been wearing a simple number 5 attached directly to their sleeve.

Robinson played 23 seasons in the big leagues, all with the Orioles from 1955 to 1977, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983. Robinson was an 18-time All-Star, won an AL MVP in 1964, a World Series MVP in 1970, an All-Star Game MVP in 1966, two World Series rings and was awarded an incredible 16 Gold Gloves for his defensive skills at third base. Following his playing career, Robinson was an Orioles coach, broadcaster, and special advisor to the team.

The Orioles also announced that the club will host a public memorial in honour of Robinson on Monday, October 2. The club says the memorial will recognize Robinson’s “impact on our organization, our city, and the sport of baseball.”
