Bill Belichick Allegedly Hated New England Patriots Wearing Blue Jerseys Over Blue Pants

In a roundtable interview featuring 15 of his former players, it was revealed that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick loathed the uniform combination his team wore in back-to-back loss to the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos in 2002.

The following is an exchange between former tight end Christian Fauria, who won Super Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX with New England, and Chad Brown, who had two stints with the Patriots in 2005 and 2007.

“We lost to Denver,” Fauria said. “I remember him kind of rambling off all those things and it was so passive-aggressive, ‘You guys think you’re so smart. That really worked. Whose f***ing bright idea was this?’”

To which Brown replied, “I think he was still bringing this up in 2007. ‘We played like crap, we didn’t do this, we did this terribly, but at least it wasn’t as f***ing bad as that all-blue uniform night.’“

New England wore its standard silver helmet, blue home jersey, blue road pants and striped road socks in both of those games, but lost by a combined score of 52-26 to bring its record to 3-4 that season.

That combination was never worn again, though the Patriots introduced their all-blue Color Rush uniforms in 2016. They won that game 27-0 and went 6-1 in the Color Rush uniform before adopting it full time in 2020 – albeit with a few tweaks.

You have to imagine Belichick feels differently about wearing blue jerseys over blue pants now, though they are just 7-7 in the home uniforms since making the switch last year.
