Born on the Bayou: Houston Dynamo Unveil 2022 Away Kit

Space City, H-Town, Clutch City, The Big Heart – Houston is a city of many nicknames. But Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo have singled one of them out as inspiration for their new 2022 away kit: the Bayou City.

Unveiled on Wednesday evening, the “Bayou City Kit” pays tribute to the 11 different bayous that run through the city of Houston and the roles they play in flood mitigation, recreation, and wildlife habitats. “The intertwined nature of the bayous means that they help connect every Houstonian together, just as the Dynamo strive to do, and this jersey aims to reflect those relationships,” reads the announcement on the club’s website.

The jersey itself is predominantly black, with a tonal pattern on the front and sleeves that “imitates the flow of water along the bayous reflected in the moonlight.” The Adidas shoulder stripes are silver, as is the trim on the solid black crew neck collar. The sleeve cuffs are also solid black, but have orange trim.

The club notes that the HD monogram on their redesigned crest, introduced for the 2021 season, was also inspired by the city’s bayou system. The crest on the Bayou City kit is slightly modified, with the monogram, wordmark and thunderbolt all rendered in silver inside the orange hexagon.

The jersey also features a silver “Bayou City” logo on the jock tag, with the nickname inside a hexagonal shield. Printed on orange tape inside the collar is the slogan “H-TOWN HOLD IT DOWN”.

The logo on the front of the shirt is that of the University of Texas’s MD Anderson Cancer Center. This is the fourth year in a row the Dynamo have sported the logo on their shirts. It has also appeared on the shirts of the NWSL’s Houston Dash since 2020.

Houston Dynamo will debut the new kit at home on Sunday, Feb. 27, when they host Real Salt Lake to kick off their 2022 MLS season.
