Bowie Baysox commemorate Shark Week as the Baysharks

The Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, take the field today as the Bowie Baysharks. The team will wear uniforms inspired by The Discovery Channel’s toothy extravaganza, Shark Week, which marked its 30th year this year. The uniforms will be auctioned off to benefit area charities.

As with many temporary name changes, one wonders whether the promotional brand might be considered as a permanent change. The Maryland town of Bowie—which is pronounced like “buoy” rather than (David) Bowie—is located 20 miles east of the Chesapeake Bay, which is home to five species of shark (give or take), including four innocuous ones and one not-so-innocuous one, the aggressive and dangerous bull shark. The team has been called the Baysox since its debut in 1993, but if they’re considering a rebrand, Baysharks would be a pretty good option.

The team also celebrates Margaritaville Day today. So fans will hear Jimmy Buffet music and play beach-themed games while the team’s uniforms serve as a constant reminder that nature’s perfectly designed predators are lurking just under the surface of the water.
