The town of Bowie, Maryland, is named for 19th-century politician William Duckett Bowie, but the local Double-A baseball team, the Bowie Baysox, will pay tribute to a different Bowie this Friday. In honor of David Bowie, who passed away earlier this year, the team will wear jerseys inspired by the rock legend for a game against the Erie SeaWolves.
The Baysox made the tongue-in-cheek announcement that they’ll change their name from the from the Bowie Baysox to the Bowie Baysox for the game. If you’re from the area, you get it already, but if not, the team explains on their website: “The Bowie Baysox (pronounced Boo-ee) will make the ultimate dedication to the British musician who shares a heteronymous last name with the city by becoming the Bowie Baysox (pronounced Boh-ee) for this special night.”
The team describes the jerseys as being “inspired by the many flamboyant outfits that David Bowie was famous for wearing during his performances,” like the body suit above created by Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto and maybe, as suggested by Brendan Maldy of SI.com’s Extra Mustard, the Alexander McQueen coat featured on the cover of Bowie’s album Earthling.
The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game to support the charity Feeding America.
