Buffalo Sabres Add “RJ” Patch to Jerseys for 2023-24

The Buffalo Sabres will wear a patch on the front of their sweaters this season featuring the initials “RJ” within a circle.

This patch will be worn in memory of Rick Jeanneret, the Sabres’ television and radio play-by-play announcer for fifty-one seasons, from their second in 1971-72 up until the end of the 2021-22 season.

Buffalo will wear different coloured versions of the patch depending on which jersey it is placed on. The home blues will feature a blue circle with yellow trim and “RJ” in yellow, the road whites a white circle with a blue “RJ,” and the black thirds will go with a black circle and “RJ” in silver.

Jeanneret was inducted into the Sabres Hall of Fame in 2011 and received the Foster Hewitt Award, granting induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. Upon his retirement, the Sabres raised a banner to the rafters of their home arena in his honour; the banner features his initials as well as his name, the years he served as a broadcaster with the team, and a microphone.

He died this past August in nearby Niagara Falls, Ontario, at the age of 81.
