Calgary Flames Bring Back “Blasty” as Third Jersey in 2022-23

Yes, Alberta, “Blasty” is back.

Today the Calgary Flames announced they would be bringing back their long-dead black alternate uniform, featuring a fire-breathing horse head on the front, as a new third jersey option in 2022-23.

The uniform was initially introduced as an alternate jersey in 1998-99 before getting promoted to the club’s full-time road uniform in 2000-01. It returned to being used as the Flames’ alternate uniform in 2003-04 when dark sweaters again became the home outfit in the NHL (which led to the introduction of the still-used “C of Red!” marketing tagline). “Blasty” was finally retired following the 2005-06 season; it returned temporarily as part of the NHL’s “Reverse Retro” program in the COVID-plagued 2020-21 season.

There are some differences between this and the original, mostly relating to the amount of red overall. The collar is now just red instead of red/yellow/red, the Flames logos on the shoulders are now white instead of red, and the cuffs of the sleeves and the around the waist are now just black instead of red. A new feature is the sublimated grey flames up either sleeve.

The re-introduction of this uniform now brings the total number of this new-for-’22 resurrected late-1990s uniforms in the league to three, following the return of the Carolina Hurricanes’ original 1997 reds and Buffalo Sabres’ black jersey from 1996 — and just like the Flames, both of these are returning as third jerseys.

Calgary announced the new black third jersey would be worn a dozen times in 2022-23, starting with a home date against the Florida Panthers on November 29th. The full schedule is below:
