The Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League are bringing old-time hockey to North Carolina with their jerseys for the 2024 Queen City Outdoor Classic.
The Checkers unveiled the jerseys on Tuesday, September 5, at Truist Field, home to the Charlotte Knights triple-A baseball team and site of the Outdoor Classic game, in which the Checkers will face the Rochester Americans on January 13, 2024.
The jersey combines styles that previous incarnations of the Checkers wore in the 1950s and the 1970s. The front of the jersey features a baseball-inspired red script “Checkers” wordmark with a black outline.
A thick red stripe runs around the shoulder yoke, while double red stripes run around the waist and each sleeve. The sleeves also have solid red cuffs and numbers overtop of the double stripes.
The back of the jersey features red varsity block numbers with white and black outlines, along with a contrasting red nameplate with white lettering.
The Checkers first announced the Queen City Outdoor Classic in April 2023, and unveiled an event logo then. That logo can be found on both shoulders of the Checkers’ jersey. The QCOC will be the first professional outdoor hockey game to be held in Charlotte, as well as the Checkers’ first appearance in an Outdoor Classic. There have been a total of 11 Outdoor Classics in AHL history prior to this season.
Replica jerseys will be available for sale closer to the game, but fans can pre-order them now. Game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off during the Outdoor Classic itself. Tickets for the game go on sale to the general public on October 16.
