Cincinnati Bengals Confirm Helmets Won’t Change With Uniform Redesign

Though we reported as much in January, the Cincinnati Bengals confirmed this week their helmet design won’t be changing when they unveil new uniforms later this spring.

“Can’t wait to see these helmets paired with #NewStripes,” the team shared on its official Instagram account.

The Bengals have worn their iconic orange helmet with six black tigers stripes since 1981. The only other helmet Cincinnati has ever worn was orange, stripeless and featured a “Bengals” wordmark on both sides. It was paired with a gray facemask from 1968-79 and a black facemask in 1980.

As for the uniforms, which last received a significant overhaul ahead of the 2004 season, Cincinnati is aiming to unveil something as timeless as the helmet.

“I know many of you have asked for these for quite some time,” Elizabeth Blackburn, the granddaughter of Bengals president Mike Brown and the team’s director of strategy and engagement, said on Wednesday. “It’s a long process working with Nike and the NFL and we have high standards. We want this next iteration of our jersey to become as beloved, iconic and timeless as our helmet.”

The Bengals have not announced a date on which they’ll reveal their new look, though it’s worth noting most of the uniform unveilings that happened in the NFL last offseason were in April. That includes the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The other two, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Football Team, revealed their uniform changes in May and July, respectively.

“We’ll be publishing a lot of great content around the launch of our new uniforms later this spring,” Blackburn said. “I will leave you with this tease to say that I hope you’re excited for a clean look.”
