The Colts announced on Thursday they will celebrate their 40th season in Indianapolis by wearing a commemorative patch during their home opener in September, though the opponent and exact date won’t be known until the NFL releases its 2023 schedule in May.

The shield-shaped patch, which will be worn on the left chest of the Colts’ blue home jersey, features the outline of Lucas Oil Stadium, the team’s iconic horseshoe logo and uses the same serifed number font that appeared on their uniforms since 2020.

After playing their first 31 seasons in Baltimore, the Colts suddenly relocated to Indianapolis in 1984. The franchise has appeared in four Super Bowls, including two as Baltimore (III and V) and two as Indianapolis (XLI and XLIV), with one victory as each location.

The Colts previously wore patches for their 10th, 25th, 30th and 35th seasons in Indianapolis, as well as their 50th season as a franchise. They also had a commemorative logo for their 20th season in Indianapolis, though it was never worn on their uniforms.

The 10th, 30th and 50th season patches were worn for the entire season, while the 35th season patch was worn for all but one Color Rush game. The 25th season patch, on the other hand, was only worn during the home opener, which doubled as the grand opening at Lucas Oil Stadium.
