The Indianapolis Colts will wear their 1956 throwback uniforms for the second time during tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers (8:15 p.m. on ESPN).
The uniforms feature two horseshoe logos on the back of the helmet, three white stripes on the sleeves of the blue jersey, a single blue stripe down the sides of the white pants and blue socks that have the same three-stripe pattern as the sleeves.
The look made its debut one year ago today in a 38-31 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which also saw the Colts Cheerleaders – the NFL’s first cheer squad – wearing time-appropriate uniforms. That includes white sweaters with a Colts script across the chest and blue skirts.
The Steelers, meanwhile, will be in their standard road uniforms of black helmets, white jerseys and yellow pants with predominantly black socks. They are 5-2 while wearing this specific combination in Indianapolis, but 0-1 on Monday Night Football (2005).
The two franchises first met in Baltimore in 1957, which means the Steelers – who wore yellow helmets in that matchup – missed these Colts’ throwback uniforms by one year. That was their first season in UCLA stripes on the shoulders and horseshoe logos on the sides of the helmet.
