The Durham Bulls have not won 20 in the Show, but it’s pretty clear the press thinks they’re colorful anyway. The team announced today that they’ll take on the moldy footwear as a temporary identity when they play as the Shower Shoes on Bull Durham Night later this season.
The nickname is a reference to this admonition from Crash Davis, famously played by Kevin Costner, to a hungover Nuke LaLoosh, equally famously played by Tim Robbins, in the 1988 movie:
Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You’ll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you’ll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press’ll think you’re colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.
Crash Davis
The brand features a pair of blue shower shoes with bright green slime growing on them—not a direct representation of the white mold on Nuke LaLoosh’s shower shoes but equally as gross. A dark blue jersey is paired with a tri-tone cap.
The Bulls have previously honored the movie that solidified their spot in the cultural lexicon by playing as the Lollygaggers. This year’s Bull Durham Night will take place July 22.
