Eagles Unveil Black Helmet for 2022, to be Replaced with Kelly Green in ’23

The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled their black alternate helmet today, nearly four months after first announcing one was on the way for 2022.

The Eagles will wear the black helmet with their existing all-black alternate uniform; the dates during which the new combo will be worn have yet to be announced.

“It’s something the majority of us as players always wanted – just a little change in uniform,” said wide receiver DeVonta Smith to PhiladelphiaEagles.com. “I like the shininess of the black; it’s something different to add to the all-black (uniforms).”

The helmet is a straight-up black version of the club’s usual Midnight Green helmet, now going into its twenty-seventh season of use. The new helmet features stylized white and silver eagle wings on either side trimmed with black on a black shell with a black facemask. Across the bumper is the team’s wordmark logo, but interestingly enough, not the new one introduced earlier this month.

The Eagles also announced that the club had initially planned on using a Kelly green throwback-inspired helmet instead of black this season, but due to issues with Nike correctly reproducing the original shade of green for their jerseys, they had to push things back a season.

The plan is for the black helmet to be used as an alternate for just the 2022 season and then switch to Kelly green as the alternate for 2023. The Eagles added that they would keep the black and Kelly greens to have two alternate helmets if the NFL allows clubs to do so for the ’23 season.
