Edmonton Oilers Add “JM” Decal to Helmet

The Edmonton Oilers will honour the memory of former coach John Muckler throughout the upcoming 2020-21 NHL season by way of a special decal they’ll be wearing on the back of their helmets.

Muckler, who died this past Monday at the age of 86, was an assistant coach with the Oilers during their four Stanley Cup championships between 1984 and 1988, he later took over the head coaching role and led the club to their fifth and final Stanley Cup in 1990.

The memorial logo shows Muckler’s initials “JM” in orange block lettering trimmed in white and blue, his initials are placed within the outer shape of the team’s long-used logo — a blue circle with an orange oil drop above.

Muckler’s time in hockey went beyond those wildly successful years in Edmonton. He first coached the Minnesota North Stars for 35 games during the 1968-69 season before heading down to the minor leagues where he won The Sporting News honours as the minor league hockey’s top coach in 1979. Following his time in Edmonton, Muckler left for Buffalo where he eventually found himself once again behind the bench for four seasons beginning in 1991. Muckler would finish his NHL coaching career with three seasons with the New York Rangers from 1998 to 2000.
