First Wave of New MLS Kits Launched Ahead of 2024 Season Kickoff

It’s that time of year again — the mad dash of Major League Soccer teams unveiling new kits before the new season begins.

The first game of the 2024 MLS season comes our way on Wednesday, February 21, when Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF host Real Salt Lake at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The rest of the league kicks off in earnest that weekend, with 14 matches between Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25.

As a reminder, MLS clubs typically release one new kit each year, alternating between primary and secondary kits. Each kit stays in the rotation for two years. In 2023, four teams had third kits — Toronto FC, Atlanta United, New York City FC and New York Red Bulls — and there are rumours of four to five teams getting third kits again this season.

Here’s the first wave of new kits for 2024 that were unveiled on Wednesday, February 14:

SPORTING KANSAS CITY – Secondary

Sporting Kansas City return to one of their most popular jersey patterns with their new secondary kit. “What started as a surprise third kit in 2013 quickly became an iconic look for the Club. It returned in 2015 and, over time, has become a ubiquitous design element and part of our brand,” reads the description on SKC’s online store. “Since then, we have included it as an accent and sign-off element on jerseys but not as the focal point of a design. Now it’s back by popular demand, with a modern, fashion-oriented evolution on the original look.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION – Primary

Dubbed the “Boston Tea Party Kit,” the New England Revolution’s new primary jersey pays homage to that defiant act in 1773 that led to the American Revolution. The body is navy blue with red raglan sleeves and wavy lines of white and red dots down the front. The collar, sleeve cuffs and side panels are solid navy blue, while the side/hem taping is red.

NEW YORK RED BULLS – Primary

The New York Red Bulls are reaching into their club history for their new primary kit. The red base is covered in a black zigzag pattern that harkens back to the colors and logo of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the club’s name from 1996 to 2006. More black accents are found on the collar, sleeve cuffs, side panels and side/hem taping, while the Adidas shoulder stripes are white.

PHILADELPHIA UNION – Primary

After straying away from it for a few years, the center stripe is back on the Philadelphia Union’s new home kit for their 15th MLS season. This time around, though, it’s made up of gold and bright blue triangles and diamonds on a navy blue base. “The first-ever Union kit featured a wide gold stripe down the center, and this kit will act as the bridge between that traditional design and the more progressive trend of Union kits in recent history,” says the writeup on MLSSoccer.com.

PORTLAND TIMBERS – Secondary

The Portland Timbers are bringing together a love of soccer with a love of nature for their new secondary kit. The off-white base features a pattern of various green tree leaves up the sides and on the sleeves. Other accents on the jersey like the collar and sleeve cuffs are a darker shade of green.
