George Washington University last week revealed an updated court design that incorporates the outline of the nation’s capital and three of its most recognizable structures.
The court was initially unveiled ahead of the 2013 season, but was refinished this summer as part of various enhancements to the Charles E. Smith Center — including a brand new jumbotron that replaces the one that crashed to the floor last fall.
The original design featured the U.S. Capitol building, the Washington Monument and the White House and now prominently displays the district’s borders at center court.
“We’re thrilled to see the image of our dynamic city on GW’s court,” said mayor Muriel Bowser. “The university has made it a priority to attract and retain our best and brightest students right here in Washington D.C. while also showcasing the international flair of our dynamic, world-class city. What a way to pay homage to the District of Columbia, featuring it so prominently for the world to see.”
Smaller changes include a new font along the baseline and the addition of the school’s athletic website and social media handle on the sidelines. The phrase “Raise High,” which appears in the university fight song, also shows up near the scorer’s table.
“We have one of the most unique and special campus locations in the world, punctuated by our student-athletes graduating on the National Mall in a truly ‘Only at GW’ experience,” said athletic director Tanya Vogel. “Our court depicts our passion for and commitment to the District as we develop global leaders who will change the world.”
The Colonials finished last season with a 9-24 overall record (4-14 in the Atlantic 10 Conference).
