The defending national champion Georgia football team will look slightly different when it takes the field this fall, as the Bulldogs announced on Thursday they are returning to a traditional block number font.
“There have been grumblings about it, people have been asking about getting the block numbers back,” director of equipment operations John Meshad told the Athens Banner-Herald. “When (athletic director) Josh Brooks took over, that was one of the first things we met about. He asked if it was possible. He said he liked it and I liked it. It’s a good look.”
Georgia wore a block font on its uniforms until 2013, when Nike introduced the “Bulldog Bold” font as part of athletic department-wide update that also included a front-facing Uga logo to complement the primary “G” logo.
According to Nike, the font was “sturdy and powerful” and drew inspiration from the anatomy of a bulldog and the arch on north campus, which was patterned after the arch on Georgia’s state seal.
The program switched to Nike’s new (at the time) Speed Machine template that season, and the font remained when the Bulldogs moved to the Vapor Untouchable template in 2017.
Georgia introduced two alternate uniforms in 2020, one of which paid homage to the 1980 national championship team. The other was a black jersey with spikes on the collar, mimicking the aforementioned Bulldog logo. Both uniforms featured block numbers, perhaps foreshadowing their full-time return.
After all, most uniform changes – no matter how big or small – are the culmination of a two-year process. It’s unclear at this time if the block number font will return for all sports, though the decals on the back of the helmets will also have to be updated for consistency’s sake.
The reveal also seems to indicate that the spiked-collar jerseys are no longer an option, as they haven’t been worn since the 2021 Peach Bowl win over Cincinnati. You may recall the Uga logo on the sleeve had the No. 100 on his collar as a nod to the program’s 100th season of being nicknamed the Bulldogs.
The last time before the 2020 season that Georgia wore a black jersey was a win over Louisiana-Lafayette in 2016. The only difference between that jersey and what wide receiver Kearis Jackson is wearing in the reveal photos is the number font.
That said, the updated uniforms will make their on-field debut when Georgia takes on Oregon in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta on Sept. 3. The Bulldogs then hold their home opener against Samford on Sept. 10.
