Although they originally planned to wear them last season, the Green Bay Packers officially unveiled their 1950s throwback uniforms on Thursday morning.
“The 1950s were one of the most interesting times in our organization’s rich history, creating the bridge between two of the greatest eras in pro football,” team president Mark Murphy said in a statement. “With the NFL growing rapidly, this time period set the stage for the construction of Lambeau Field and for the team’s success in the 1960s and beyond. We hope our fans enjoy celebrating our history with this new alternate uniform.”

The green jerseys, which are noticeably on the same Ripon template as the Packers home and away jerseys, feature gold numbers and a double striping pattern on the sleeves. The green pants, meanwhile, feature a single gold stripe down the sides, while the green socks include the same stripes as the sleeves, just like the team wore from 1950-53.
The throwback look is complete with Green Bay’s standard gold helmet – sans decals – and a gray facemask. That is the only part of the uniform that isn’t historically accurate, as NFL players weren’t required to wear facemasks until 1955.
That said, this time period wasn’t great for the Packers, who went just 14-33-1 that span. It was notable, however, in that Green Bay returned to a green and gold color scheme after 10 seasons in navy blue and gold uniforms.
This marks the third throwback uniform for the Packers in the last 12 seasons, as they donned 1929 and 1937-48 designs a total of nine times between 2010-20.
The former included navy blue jerseys with a gold circle on the front, tan pants and a plain brown helmet – though that was later changed to the standard gold lid due to the NFL’s one-helmet rule – while the latter feature navy blue jerseys with gold yoke across the shoulders.
The 1950s throwback uniforms will make their on-field debut on Oct. 24, when Green Bay hosts the Washington Football Team.. It’s unclear if they’ll be worn again this season, but like previous throwbacks, they’re likely to remain in the rotation for several years.
