Houston Cougars Wearing Uvalde Helmet Decal During AAC Baseball Tournament

The Houston Cougars baseball team is wearing a helmet decal during the American Athletic Conference Tournament to honor the 19 students and two teachers who lost their lives during a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday.

The third-seeded Cougars are now 1-0 while wearing the decal, which features a black “U” inside a white state of Texas, after beating No. 7 seed Memphis, 8-7, on Thursday night. They’ll take on the winner of No. 2 seed UCF and Memphis in the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Houston’s campus is 280 miles east of Uvalde, the site of the deadliest school shooting in the United States since 20 children and six adult staff members were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., in 2012.

Similar tributes were seen across college athletics following that shooting, as well as those at Sparks Middle School in Nevada in 2013, Umpqua Community College in Oregon in 2015 and Oxford High School in Michigan last fall, among others.
