For six games this season, the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians will represent the colors of their parent club of 19 years, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Indians will wear specialty “Young Bucs” jerseys and caps for Prospects Weekends in May and June.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are often referred to as the Bucs, or Buccos, which are nicknames that derive from the term buccaneer, another word for pirate. The moniker “Young Buc” is a twist on the phrase “Young Buck,” which refers to an adventurous but often inexperienced young man (and also rapper David Darnell Brown).
The team will wear jerseys that are yellow and black, reflective of not only the Pirates, but the other major professional teams in Pittsburgh, the NHL’s Penguins and the NFL’s Steelers. (It’s a truism among sports branding fans that Pittsburgh is the only city in the United States whose major-league sports teams all wear the same color.)
Indianapolis will wear the Young Bucs uniforms May 17–19 against the Toledo Mud Hens and June 7–9 against the Columbus Clippers.
