Introducing the Battle Creek Battle Jacks: Part of this complete breakfast!

The collegiate summer level Northwoods League’s Battle Creek Bombers rebranded today as the Battle Creek Battle Jacks. If that name sounds like something you’d see advertised during Saturday morning cartoons, it’s because the city of Battle Creek, Michigan, was once home to more than 100 cereal manufacturers, earning it the nickname “Cereal City.”

The Battle Jacks nickname has something of a triple-entendre: Jack is a euphemism for a home run in baseball, a jack of all trades is a multi-talented individual, and Battle Creek is home to Apple Jacks manufacturer Kellogg’s.

The team’s new moniker Battle Jacks has the same cadence as one of the city’s previous teams, the Class A Michigan Battle Cats, who played from 1995 to 2002 (and had a kind of wild logo)—but the mascot for this franchise is a Jack Russell terrier.

“Battle Jacks seems to have resonated with the Battle Creek community,” said Battle Jacks General Manager Tyler Shore, quoted on the Battle Creek Enquirer, “and we are incredibly excited to begin this new era for the organization. We have a new owner, a new name, a new logo, and a new vision for what we want this team to be and we can’t wait to share that with the community we call home.”

The nickname Battle Jacks beat out three others culled from a name-the-team contest, Crunchers, Blue Collars, and Doughnut. This is the first name change for the franchise, which was founded as the Battle Creek Bombers in 2007. They’ll debut this summer, when the 2022 Northwoods League season begins.
