The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have gone full double entendre in their latest promotion. They’ll change their name to the Lehigh Valley Whiz Kids on June 29, when they commemorate “A Salute to Philadelphia.”
The uniforms will pay homage to the 1950 NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies, nicknamed the Whiz Kids, as well as whiz, the cheese-ish product the locals like to slab on cheesesteaks with a paint stirrer.
The promotion is a follow-up to last year’s Salute to Philadelphia, during which the IronPigs played a game as the Lehigh Valley Cheesesteaks. That promotion, during which the team wore black uniforms instead of this year’s Phillies red, was well-received, and spawned some online spatting with the Fresno Grizzlies and their food-based minor league alternate identity, the Fresno Tacos.
The jerseys will feature one of the IronPigs roughly 50 alternate logos (give or take), a stylized Liberty Bell.
The IronPigs play about 60 miles from Philadelphia, so the homage to their parent club’s hometown will surely be welcomed. In-game entertainment will feature the Phillie Phanatic, beer from local breweries, and Philadelphia-themed music. The jerseys will be auctioned off for charity.
