Kansas City Chiefs Using Original Arrowhead Stadium Field Design

The Kansas City Chiefs are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Arrowhead Stadium this season, and to mark the occasion, they’ve painted the field with the exact same design that was used when the venue opened in 1972.

The original Arrowhead Stadium logo is displayed at the 50-yard line, while the red end zones feature a gold lowercase “Chiefs” wordmark that is flanked by an interlocking “KC” and vintage AFC logo inside of white circles.

There are only a few small differences between the original design – which was used from 1972-79 – and the 2022 version, including the lack of a “G” on the goal lines and the Chiefs’ primary logo in between the 35- and 40-yard lines.

The NFL logo also appears on the 25-yard lines on the current field, as is standard across the league.

According to head groundskeeper Travis Hogan, the Chiefs asked former groundskeeper George Toma to assist in the process and make it as accurate to his original design as possible.

The throwback design will make its return for tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, which kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime. It’s unclear if it’s a season-long promotion or if it will be replaced by a different design in Week 5 against the Las Vegas Raiders, however.
