The Kansas men’s basketball program will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its 1922-23 Helms national championship by wearing throwback uniforms during Saturday’s game against West Virginia (4 p.m. ET on ESPN).
The uniforms are actually the inverse of what the Jayhawks wore that season, with off-white jerseys featuring a black Kansas wordmark and black shorts with an off-white stripe down the sides and around the bottom.
The wordmark closely resembles the jerseys from that season, though the players obviously didn’t have numbers, the adidas logo on the collar or the Big XIIl logo and commemorative patch on the shoulders at the time.
Led by legendary coach Forrest “Phog” Allen, the Jayhawks went 17-1 that season to capture the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship.
They were retroactively awarded their second straight national title by the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1943, as the NCAA Tournament did not begin until 1939 and the foundation decided to retroactively select champions.
Kansas’ roster included guards Paul Endacott and Charlie Black, who were retroactively named All-Americans by Helms, as well as legendary Kentucky head coach Adolph Rupp, who was a reserve for the Jayhawks.
