We’ve seen our fair share of Patriotic uniforms in sports lately, from MLB’s holiday uniforms to the NFL dressing up in camo, and even in college football, teams have taken to wearing the Stars & Stripes (and some have even gotten in a bit of trouble for it). However, nobody has gone to the lengths of actually putting the U.S.’s National Anthem all over their uniforms — Until now.
The Maryland Terrapins have decided to honor the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore from the War of 1812 with some especially Patriotic uniforms. From their press release concerning the unveiling:
Two-hundred years later to the day, our team will honor the anniversary of the historic event by wearing uniforms that pay homage to it.
The uniforms highlight the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry, “which is inscribed onto the jersey sleeve, helmet, and footwear. The logo on the helmet and pant features the outline of Forg McHenry and an image of the famous flag that flew through the night of the Battle, which inspired our national anthem.
And now, the photos. And yes, that is the Star Spangled Banner on the golden part of the uniforms.
The Anthem is even on the helmets, as you can clearly see in these next couple of pictures. The main helmet logo is actually a Terrapin from a top-down perspective, and like the rest of the uniform, the turtle is showing its pride for the country.
When we said that the Star Spangled Banner was all over these uniforms, we meant it; It’s oven on the soles of the special shoes commemorating the occasion.
Yep, it’s on the bottom of the shoes. When they dubbed these the Star-Spangled uniforms, they were not joking. The uniforms are currently on display, and according to Terps beat writer Alex Kirshner, they’ve definitely caught the eye of a few people, as evidenced by this random guy who wants to take a photo of the unis.
So, what do you think of these extremely Patriotic uniforms? Are you a fan of something commemorating the War of 1812? Or do you think that this could have been done better? As usual, we’d love to hear what you think about these uniforms.
