When the Miami Dolphins take the field for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers (4:05 p.m. ET on CBS), they’ll be outfitted in the road version of their 1966 throwback uniforms.
If it were up to head coach Brian Flores, though, those throwback uniforms would be the Dolphins’ full-time look.
“I’m not a big fashion guy,” Flores said during a teleconference last week. “I know there are people who love the old uniforms. Old uniforms, new uniforms, I like to coach. I don’t care what we’re wearing. But if you want me to vote, I’ll vote for the old uniforms. If you want me to cast a vote, if I had to choose the old or the new, I’d go with the old.”
Miami has worn the home version of the throwback uniforms — which feature a traditional stripping pattern on the sleeves and a white helmet a gray facemask and a with a helmet-wearing dolphin leaping through a sunburst on both sides — every season since 2015. The road version was introduced into the rotation in 2019.
The Dolphins last underwent a significant uniform change in 2013, which included a modern update to their primary logo. But they’re scheduled to wear throwback uniforms two more times this season, with the home set making appearances against the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots on Dec. 13 and 20, respectively.
If the Dolphins win those games with rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa under center, the calls to see the throwback uniforms return in a full-time capacity will only get louder.
