Minnesota Wild Unveil New Green-and-Gold “The 78s” Alternate Uniform

The Minnesota Wild have made it official, unveiling their new green-and-gold alternate “The 78s” uniform. The jersey matches the leaked photos we saw back in August and will make its on-ice debut on October 21 vs the Blue Jackets.

Minnesota’s new jersey is identical to what the Wild wore as their Reverse Retro uniform a handful of times last year, with a couple of small exceptions. Just like 2022-23, it’s a green base with white shoulders trimmed in gold and the Minnesota Wild logo on the chest re-coloured to match the North Stars style. New for this season is the addition of the club’s “State of Hockey” logo as a patch on the right shoulder, and the swapping out of the retro orange/black NHL shield for the modern version, the Reverse Retro branding within the inside back collar has also been removed.

My favourite addition to the uniform is the treatment of the captaincy patches; the letters C and A are now housed within a patch in the shape of the state map of Minnesota.

“Our primary home and road jerseys are as popular as ever with our fans,” said John Maher, Minnesota Wild Senior Brand Advisor, in the press release. “They also let us know last season that they still loved this legacy look so we decided to keep it in our mix as a new alternate jersey, with some updated ‘State of Hockey’ details.”

The Wild have announced they will wear the new uniform fifteen times in 2023-24: Oct. 21 vs. Columbus, Nov. 4 vs. the New York Rangers, Nov. 24 vs. Colorado, Dec. 3 vs. Chicago, Dec. 16 vs. Vancouver, Dec. 23 vs. Boston, Dec. 27 vs. Detroit, Dec. 31 vs. Winnipeg, Jan. 13 vs. Arizona, Jan. 27 vs. Anaheim, Feb. 17 vs. Buffalo, March 10 vs. Nashville, March 23 vs. St. Louis, March 30 vs. Vegas and April 6 vs. Winnipeg.

The uniform is based on the uniform first worn by the 1978 Minnesota North Stars, hence the nickname “The 78s.” The North Stars were the first NHL team to call the State of Minnesota home; they relocated to Dallas, Texas, following the 1992-93 season to become the Dallas Stars.

Minnesota had previously worn a similar design during the first year of the Reverse Retro program in 2021, just with the colours flipped; this gives the Wild a ready-to-go road white option should the team finally decide to go to the green and gold full-time one day.

Minnesota becomes the second team to adopt a Reverse Retro design as a full-time uniform, following the Calgary Flames bringing back their “Blasty” design as a third last October.
