MLS, Adidas Unveil 2022 Primeblue Kits to Raise Awareness of Plastic Ocean Waste

Major League Soccer and Adidas are once again teaming up to raise awareness about plastic waste in Earth’s oceans through special kits.

The Primeblue kits — unveiled on Thursday, May 26, and scheduled to be worn in MLS matches this Saturday and Sunday — are made with a high-performance material that contains at least 50% Parley Ocean Plastic.

Parley plastic is collected from beaches, coastal communities and shorelines before it can reach the ocean. It is then reworked into technical fibers that can be used in either clothing or footwear.

“Major League Soccer is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and raising awareness about environmental issues, including plastic waste on land and in water,” said JoAnn Neale, MLS president and chief administrative officer, in a press release. “We are thrilled to have an innovative partner like adidas that enables our clubs to sport kits that inspire the soccer community to join together to preserve our ocean and create a cleaner world.”

The kits to be worn this weekend are either white with pink accents or blue with red accents. They all use Adidas’s Condivo 21 teamwear template, which features a tonal ripple pattern. This same template was used by Algeria in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, and will also be used by several teams outfitted by Adidas in the upcoming Women’s Euro 2022 tournament.

The colors of club crests and sponsor logos vary. On the white kits, they are either monochromatic pink or black; on the blue kits, they are either monochromatic red or white.

A photo of CF Montreal’s Primeblue kit was not available, but MLS’s kit matchups for Week 14 indicate they will wear a white kit with pink trim against FC Cincinnati.

MLS has also teamed up with creative agency We Are Social New York to create content highlighting the adverse effects of plastic waste in our oceans. Individual clubs will also host events over the next few weeks to create sustainable projects and raise awareness of the impact of marine plastics.
