MLS Releases PRIMEBLUE Jerseys Made with Recycled Ocean Plastic for All 27 Teams

Major League Soccer is once again diving into environmental awareness with the release of a line of PRIMEBLUE jerseys, made with 50% Parley Ocean plastic.

The jerseys will be worn for games on the weekend of May 29 and 30, 2021. Roughly half of the 27 MLS teams have light-coloured jerseys with blue accents, while the other half have darker blue jerseys with red-orange accents.

As these jerseys will be worn in games, the game sponsors for each club appear on their respective jerseys. This was not the case last week when MLS released jerseys honouring the LGBTQ+ community; those were only worn before matches, so clubs’ training gear sponsors were included.

Parley Ocean plastic is “upcycled plastic waste intercepted on shorelines and coastal areas,” according to MLSsoccer.com. “The jerseys are a part of the many ways the league raises awareness for environmental issues and helps to create sustainable communities as part of MLS WORKS’ year-long Greener Goals initiative.”

MLS has also partnered with Twitter to give PRIMEBLUE jerseys to deserving fans. Until Friday, May 28, fans can tweet to nominate people who have made positive impacts in their communities using the hashtag #JerseySwapEntry and tagging their favourite club. The winners will be announced on Twitter after each match that the jerseys are worn.

MLS also released kits made with upcycled ocean plastic in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
