Montana Grizzlies To Wear 2001 National Championship Throwback Uniforms

The Montana football program will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its 2001 national championship by wearing throwback uniforms during Saturday’s game against Sacramento State.

The uniforms are nearly identical replicas of what the Grizzlies wore that season, when they beat Furman to finish 15-1 and capture their second and most recent national title.

The maroon jersey uses a mesh-like material and includes silver numbers with a white drop shadow, small Montana wordmark on the chest, vintage paw logos on the sleeves and silver trim on the collar and cuffs.

The helmet is gray with a maroon facemask and Script “Griz” on both sides, as are the pants, which feature that same wordmark on the right hip opposite of a maroon Nike Swoosh.

The only differences from the original design are the tackle-twill numbers, which were screenprinted in 2001; the collar and cuffs, which weren’t quite as thick at the time; and the Script “Griz,” which was previously on the left hip.

There’s also a state-shaped patch on the right shoulder, opposite of a white Nike Swoosh, that reads “2001 National Champions.”

More than 50 members of that team, including former head coach Joe Glenn, are expected to be in attendance for Saturday’s game against the Hornets, which kicks off at 3 p.m. ET and will be broadcast locally on ABC.
