The New York Giants announced this week they’ll celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their win in Super Bowl XLVI by wearing the exact uniform combination from that game against the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 17.
This is particularly notable for two reasons, as it will mark the first time since the 2000 opener that they’ll wear their standard road uniforms at home. It’s also the only time this season they’ll wear gray pants after introducing new white road pants that feature the same stripe as the sleeves on their white road jersey.
“The 2021 season is special for many reasons as we celebrate the anniversary of the Super Bowl XLVI championship team, Eli Manning entering the Ring of Honor, the jersey retirements of Eli and Michael Strahan, and of course, fans returning to MetLife Stadium,” team president and chief executive officer John Mara said in a statement. “The uniform lineup is an exciting extension of the year-long celebration.”
The new road white pants will make their debut in Week 4 for New York’s game at the New Orleans Saints. They’ll be worn a total of five times this season.
The Giants will also wear their all-white Color Rush uniform in back-to-back weeks this fall, at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 22 and against the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 28.
Introduced in 2016, the Color Rush uniforms are modeled after what the franchise wore on the road from 1980-99. The white jersey features blue and red stripes on the sleeves and collar that can also be seen down the sides of the pants, while the helmet includes a “GIANTS” decal instead of the familiar “NY” and white facemasks instead of the customary gray.
New York’s standard home uniforms will remain the same, meanwhile, with blue jerseys and white pants.
“We’re an old-school team that appreciates and respects its past while also looking to the future, and these uniforms reflect that,” head coach Joe Judge said. “Our players take pride in wearing the Giants uniform. Just as importantly, I think our fans are proud of what the uniform represents.”
