New York Knicks Alter Colours for 2023-24 Season

The New York Knicks have a new logo and a new colour scheme for the 2023-24 NBA season.

You probably would never have noticed if I didn’t say anything about it (the new logo and colours are in the header of this post!). They did the same thing last season too, and I didn’t even notice it then. It’s slight! (and kinda sneaky)

Specifically for 2023-24, the only change comes to the shade of orange used throughout the Knicks’ identity — it’s lighter. This combines with a newer, slightly darker blue and darker silver that the club introduced prior to the recently completed 2022-23 season.

Here’s a look at the colour changes the Knicks have made both last year and this year, compared to the logo used previously:

In 2011, the Knicks dropped black from their logo (black still remains in their official colour scheme to this day despite not being in the logo); they also darkened the blue and enclosed the “NEW YORK” part above the mark inside the white border. Eleven years later, for the 2022-23 season, both the blue and silver used in the logo got darker; these two new shades were then carried over into the new combo for 2023-24 along with a lighter shade of orange.

Slight colour changes like this aren’t uncommon throughout sports; they’ve been happening for decades. Teams typically will not publically announce such minor changes; instead will just make a simple adjustment to their official style guide where detailed-obsessed logo nerds such as myself will (sometimes) catch that something’s different. The Knicks did not make an announcement about this; I found the change on my own — keep this in mind for those of you ready to comment things like “Why’d they make a big deal over that?!” or “Who’d they pay a million dollars for that little change?!” — they didn’t, and they didn’t. (update: lol, called it)

Going into 2023-24 the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings will also be making minor colour changes; our friends Conrad Burry and TruColor.net found those two and posted them to Twitter earlier this week (we’ll have stories on those coming up as well).

Now’s a good time as any to take a look back at the New York Knicks logo history, starting with their time in the BAA back in 1946 right up through last year’s one-year colour combo and including this year’s lighter shade of orange.
