Nike Unveils Quartet of New National Team Kits Ahead of Women’s Euro 2022

With the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament only about a month away, Nike has unveiled new national team kits for four countries participating in the tournament.

Home and away kits for England, France, the Netherlands and Finland were all unveiled this week. Nike also manufactures kits for Portugal, but since they were a late entry replacing Russia due to UEFA and FIFA sanctions, they may not get a new set of kits in time for the tournament, which kicks off July 6.

Here’s a closer look at the Nike kits released this week:

ENGLAND

Tournament hosts England are ready to shine this summer. Both their home and away kits feature “iridescent pearl-like” detailing on the crests. The all-white home kit also features a tonal knit geometric pattern that references the angular cut of diamonds.

The away kits are solid crimson with darker red sleeve cuffs and side stripes. The front half of the crew neck collar is solid red, while the back half features a tonal pattern of triangles.

NETHERLANDS

Dutch teams just wouldn’t look right if they weren’t wearing orange, so Nike gave the Dutch women’s team a no-nonsense solid orange home kit for Euro 2022. A black stripe runs down each side of the jersey, and the national team crest features an orange lioness inside a black shield.

The Dutch away kit is inspired by the De Stijl art movement, which originated in the Netherlands with artists like Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. This abstract movement was defined by precisely rendered geometric forms. Those same sorts of forms appear in red and blue — the colours of the Dutch flag — on the white away shirt. The crest on the away shirt uses a red shield instead of black, but the lioness remains orange.

FRANCE

The French women’s national team home kit for Euro 2022 is chock full of little details that really add up. The tonal blue pattern all over contains torches symbolizing freedom, wheat stalks symbolizing fraternity and sorority, and olive branches symbolizing victory. A red stripe with “Les Bleues” embossed into it runs down each side, and the back half of the collar is red. Inside the collar is a badge reading “Nos differences nous unissent” (“Our differences unite us”). A small French flag adorns the left sleeve cuff, and the familiar rooster crest of the Fédération Française de Football sits on the left chest.

The French away kit is a stark contrast to the home kit in its simplicity. It is almost entirely white, save for copper side panels embossed with the same pattern from the home kit. The FFF crest is also copper, with a thick black outline. The badge inside the collar remains, albeit recoloured, and the French flag remains on the sleeve cuff.

FINLAND

While Nike made kits specially for the women’s teams of the other three countries, Finland’s new home and away kits will be worn by both the men’s and women’s teams. The white home kit with a blue cross is very similar to its predecessor, which the men’s team wore at Euro 2020 last summer and proved very popular.

The away kit is inspired by Finland’s vast forests. Predominantly blue, the front of the jersey features “a bold and experimental salmia checkered forest pattern,” according to the announcement from Suomen Palloliitto, the Finnish national football association (translated to English by Google). The back is solid blue, and the shoulder and sleeves feature the fingerprint pattern found on Nike’s Strike II teamwear template.

A special edition of the home jersey sold on Suomen Palloliitto’s website features the names of Finnish national team players past and present written in the number font.
