North Carolina Tar Heels To Wear Throwback Uniforms In Return To Carmichael Arena

For the first time in more than three decades, the North Carolina men’s basketball team will play a regular-season game in historic Carmichael Arena.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, the Tar Heels will wear throwback uniforms during Sunday’s game against Wofford (4 p.m. on ACC Network).

North Carolina began play at what was then was known as Carmichael Auditorium in December 1965. The Tar Heels haven’t played a regular-season game there since a 90-79 win over North Carolina State in January 1986.

Carmichael Arena was the location of North Carolina 80-72 win over William & Mary in the National Invitation Tournament in March 2010, however, as the Dean Smith Center was undergoing scheduled renovations — since the Tar Heels weren’t exactly expecting to miss the NCAA Tournament that season.

As for the uniforms, North Carolina first broke out these throwbacks last season in honor of the 50th anniversary of their 1969 team, the last in program history win three consecutive conference titles and make three straight Final Four appearances.

The white home uniforms feature the familiar Carolina Blue accents and arched lettering on the front of the jersey, as well as a throwback design and Tar Heel logo on the shorts.

There are a few small differences between this year’s uniform and last year’s, as the Jordan Brand logo on the right shoulder is outlined in gold to match the new gold tab on the back collar of the jersey, which signifies that North Carolina has won a national championship while outfitted by Nike or its subsidiary. The Tar Heels have also placed an American flag and an ACC patch on the left shoulder this time around.

North Carolina is 6-3 on the young season, having dropped three of their last four games. Wofford, meanwhile, is 6-4 overall but has won four game in a row.
