Northwestern Channels Grizzlies For Senior Day Unis

The Northwestern basketball team last Thursday released alternate uniforms for their annual Senior Day game that ooze ‘90s nostalgia.

The black uniform — designed by seniors Jordan Ash, Charlie Hall, Vic Law, Dererk Pardon and Ryan Taylor — features a retro-style font reminiscent of the Vancouver Grizzlies’ logo, with claw marks to boot.

The shorts, meanwhile, prominently display a new Wildcat logo clutching a basketball with its claws. Both pieces are accented by trim filled with the Chicago star and the team motto, “Pound the Rock.”

This marks the third time in program history Northwestern has collaborated with Under Armour to create the “By The Players” uniform. The tradition began in 2014 when the entire team designed a uniform worn during an upset win over rival Illinois and has since evolved into a unique experience for the senior class.

The program’s official press release states this year’s design was inspired by NBA uniforms from the 1990s — rather than entirely by the Grizzlies, which may have come with legal ramifications — as it was “the decade in which NU players fell in love with the game of basketball.” We’ll just have to ignore the fact that this year’s group of seniors was either not born or still in diapers when Vancouver switched to a simpler uniform ahead of the 2000-01 season.

Northwestern’s new look was very inspired by the NBA’s old Vancouver Grizzlies
