Oakland A’s to Wear Patch Honouring Ray Fosse in 2022

The Oakland Athletics announced today that they would be remembering the late Ray Fosse by wearing a memorial patch on their uniform sleeve in 2022.

Fosse, who died this past October at the age of 74, won two World Series titles with the A’s in 1973 and 1974 before serving as a broadcaster with the team during his post-playing days from 1986 until having to step away due to health reasons in 2021.

Oakland shared no details or photos on what the Ray Fosse memorial patch would look like, only adding that it would be worn just on their home white uniform and apparently not on their road greys nor their alternate kelly greens or yellows.

It’s a bit of an unusual move to limit a memorial patch to only one of a team’s uniforms; several commenters posted to the A’s social media accounts expressed disappointment about not wearing the patch on all of their uniforms.

Yesterday, we got our first look at the patch the Athletics will be wearing this season for Ray Fosse courtesy Matt Kawahara on Twitter:

The patch reads “RAY” in green lettering on a gold circle trimmed in white and green. In front of the “RAY” is a green and white microphone containing a yellow A’s cap logo. In the background, we see the white outline of a catcher’s mask. This is a tribute to Fosse’s career with the Athletics beginning as a catcher in the 1970s and finishing as a broadcaster in 2021.
