Orix Buffaloes of Japan will wear plaid jerseys in 2016

Remember how everybody went wild over the Arizona Diamondbacks and their new uniforms that seemingly bucked most of what we’ve come to know and love about traditional baseball uniforms? Well, get ready for a couple of uniforms that make those look like the New York Yankees’ traditional pinstripes.

The Orix Buffaloes of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League have decided to go in a pretty odd direction with their alternate uniforms in 2016: A plaid direction.

This is apparently part of the team’s “Happy and Good” promotion/tagline for the 2016 season. What does that have to do with plaid? I have absolutely no idea, but sports teams have worn weirder uniforms for stranger reasons, so let’s just let the Buffaloes rock with this.

Also, Craig Calcaterra of NBC’s Hardball Talk was one of the first to point out that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a high-level baseball team wear plaid on the diamond. Remember the 1916 New York Giants? There’s no word on whether or not the Buffaloes are actually sneakily paying a 100-year tribute to that team with this look, but there’s no debating that the Buffaloes will be turning heads with this look.

One thing is for certain: Even with Arizona making waves with their uniforms and the Buffaloes going plaid in Japan, I figure that it’ll be a long, long time before we see plaid in Major League Baseball again.
