The Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos have been teasing the unveiling of what they have been calling “baseball’s most ferocious sandwich-based logo” all week. In a Minor League Baseball alternate logo landscape that features Steamed Cheeseburgers (Hartford Yard Goats), Scrapple (Delmarva Shorebirds), and Cheesesteaks (Lehigh Valley IronPigs), just to name a few, them is, as they say, fightin’ words.
Nonetheless, the Blue Wahoos went right ahead with their new logo featuring a favorite concession item that made its debut last year. The Crabzilla is foot-high sandwich that includes a full soft-shell crab, crab remoulade, pork belly, parmesan crab mac and cheese, fried shrimp, crab pups, lettuce, and tomato served on a brioche bun over a bed of crab fries. The new logo incorporates most of those items, focusing primarily on an angry, anthropomorphized soft-shell crab.
This is not the first time a minor league team has created an alternate brand based on a concession item. The Akron RubberDucks notably played as the Screamers last season, named for their 21-scoop ice cream sundae.
There’s no word on when the Crabzilla logo will make its on-field debut (or when baseball will make any sort of 2020 debut, for that matter), but we’ll keep a close eye and let you know as soon as we do.
